"The Meaning of the City" is the theological "counterpoint" to Ellul's 'Technological Society', a work that analysed the phenomenon of the autonomous and totally manipulative post-industrial world. Ellul systematically applies the principle of examining the biblically based theological significance of every social and political problem the he has studied. Thus, his work 'Politics of Man, Politics of God', is the theological pendant to the book 'The Political Illusion'. This distinction between thelogical and social or political significance has not much to do with the order of thought as with the order of the expression of that thought, to echo an Aristotelian dichotomy. For Ellul the Bible is to be understood as ceaselessly putting questions to us; and we, of course, are ceaselessly putting questions to it. The ceaseles "feedback"-interaction established in this way is an integral part of the Ellulian dialectic. — Excerpt from John Wilkinson's introduction.
